Harmfulness of sedentary behavior

People have never spent more time sitting.

We sit at work. We sit in the car and we sit at home. There are numerous studies which have determined the harmful effect long periods of sitting have on the spine, the development of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other illnesses. While we are sitting, the pressure in the lower back is 150% whereas it is 100% while we are standing.

Height adjustable desks are most often used in order to reduce the amount of time spent sitting. However, researches have shown that people spend about an hour standing when they use standing desks.
